“Ooh la la la” contest, India’s first “Band-Hunt” music show was a huge success and created a history of sorts. Launched in the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh by Saregama India Ltd, in association with Group M (ESP), “Ooh la la la” with an apt tag line “Do you have music in you”, literally triggered the music in the passionate souls and urged the musicians, vocalists, instrumentalists, composers, bands and music lovers in large to participate in the contest to exhibit their caliber and bring the musician out in them.
AR Rahman, the Mozart of Madras, who made Indians proud by winning the Oscar, himself championed the cause to conduct such a nationwide band talent hunt. Enthralling the music buffs through Indian cinema music for well over 15 years, AR Rahman has always endeavoured in nurturing and building musical talent across languages and the broad genres fusing rich and varied music styles. It is interesting to note that the music maestro, credited with a long list of honours from several national and international awards of repute and having scaled the pinacle of music, has his apetite for music still growing at a frentic pace. The reclusive composer with his breathtaking achievements and insatiable passion for music, always willingly reaches out to little known new singers and musicians from all over the country to lend their voices and instruments to his songs and score.
A plethora of new singers and musicians who have made a mark in the Indian film industry bears testimony to the “Rahman phenomenon” that is reigning supreme in the world of music.
Aimed at bringing out the hidden talent of musicians worldwide and give them a platform to perform, “Ooh la la la” was indeed a band hunt with a difference. The contest tested the originality, ability to perform live, skills to develop and produce new sounds and melodies. The music wizard himself along with other lead musicians passionately witnessed the talents of the budding Music Bands and chose the winners.
The entire activity was implemented as ground event in fourteen cities and broadcasted by Sun Network as prime time content. The show was telecasted by Sun TV as “Mirinda Ooh la la la” contest in Tamil Nadu, Gemini TV aired the show as “7UP Ooh la la la” contest in Andhra Pradesh.
Finally the music maestro A R Rahman unconventionally announced six bands to be the champions of the Ooh la la la talent hunt from Tamil Nadu. He declared Agam, Madras Tunes and Shrishti in addition to crowning the three finalists Zinx, Oxygen, V3 as winners. For the Ooh la la la talent hunt from Andra Pradesh, the three finalists Catharsis, Band of Boys and Audio League were crowned as winners. |
